What hour do the cows come home
   to put themselves to bed,
to wander over to the barn,
   and hang a heavy head?

I wonder what they dream about
when they have gone to sleep?
Of meadows full of clover flowers
   or full of silly sheep?

Do you suppose a cow can snore?
   It must be pretty loud.
Do they prefer to sleep alone,
   or in a cow-y cloud?

Perhaps when days are long and warm
   and Sun's in Summer's sky,
they'd rather not return at all,
   and let us wonder why.
