Stewart Bartlam: Beanie

There are people with faces so singular that
they look out of place when topped off by a hat.
No matter the style, whether loosish or tight,
my head in a titfer just doesn't look right,
so imagine the joy that replaced my despair
when I chanced on a hat I could actually wear.

A beanie pulled down over both of your ears
will spare you the glances and banter and jeers.
If the winter's arrived and is baring its claws
and is shaking its fur and emitting its roars
a beanie is best and will work every day
to keep Beasts from the East and their brothers at bay.

I feel free from care in the places I roam
with a beanie to cover my smooth shining dome.
I'm a mild- mannered person and easily jarred
but I look in my beanie like a man who is hard.
With it donned, I fear nothing on land or on sea ‒
a unified force is my beanie and me!
