Basil Ransome-Davies: Sunday Excursions
Outward from the busy city
Runs the friendly Green Line coach.
Like a welcoming committee,
Trippers peer for its approach,
Devotees of rural leisure,
Faces lit with weekend pleasure,
Mother with the treats for snacking –
Sweets and Five Boys – father packing
Marmite sandwiches and bait-tin, keen to fish for perch and roach.
Herts and Bucks provide a-plenty
Country charm on which to dote
For the rambling cognoscenti:
Tring, the Chalfonts, Codicote,
Chorleywood and Burnham Beeches.
Everywhere the Green Line reaches
Passengers shrug off their sorrow
Till the shrill alarm tomorrow
When the hand of work and duty once more grabs them by the throat.
