Michael Swan: Bin It

The first three lines
make no sense
and I think
shall I bin it
but then I think
maybe line four
will pull it all together
and of course
this is not the case,
but I tell myself
look, Mike,
you're being self-indulgent,
a poem doesn't just offer itself to you
on a plate,
you have to work at it,
go out to meet it,
dig deep,
let the whole of your being
on many levels
with the multifaceted
vision of the poet,
so I read line five
and I read line six
and I say
what the hell
and bin it.
