“I wish I knew which one I was from.” – Davey, age 20
Was it lefty or righty that started you out
(with some help, naturally, from your dad)?
Who can tell? All I know is I’ve got to let go
of your earliest bachelor pad –
helpful practice, perhaps, for a time soon to come
when you’ll seldom spend weeks, even days,
in the blue, boyhood room where the ‘80s tunes boom
and you sleep until noon on vacays;
when I’ll travel to see the apartment you’ve found
in Manhattan’s or Silicon’s dregs,
and I’ll pray till I burst that at least – like your first –
your new neighborhood has some good eggs.
