The holiday dinner is ended.
They've sent off the last of the kin.
How soothing the silence pervading the house,
Compared to the previous din.
The children, their spouses, the grand-kids –
The boisterous carrying on!
Be thankful that everyone's here for a change;
Be thankful again when they've gone.
And now, like two surgeons dissecting,
They'll start their routines, known by heart:
He'll strip down the huge turkey carcass for soup
While she picks the family apart.
