A thought walked in today, without
as much as a by your leave.

It was not a profound thought.
Not the kind that starts off debates.
It was not even politically inclined.
Though that didn’t mean
that it didn’t possess
knots and tangles and frays.
I have no idea how deep
it ran, or how still its waters were.

My mind was in its usual state
of morning disarray
with piles of words lying here
and there. A messy head
of ideas. And I hadn’t even run
a comb through them yet,
when that thought came traipsing
in, with neither a nod nor
an “excuse me please.” Or even
a polite “if I may.” It simply
dropped into my head
at breakfast time, and stayed.
