The only thing we're still precocious at
is anniversaries. Friends try to rally
once we've revealed our overwhelming tally—
“Congrats, you guys,” a hearty shoulder pat.
It's clear they're thinking, though, No way two kids
can grow to middle age and not hit boredom.
Marriage needs spice and thrills, and you've ignored 'em;
too bad your love is headed for the skids.
Spice? Thrills? We've had our share of both, for sure:
two babies slid to teenhood in a second;
jobs, cities swooped away as new ones beckoned;
our nation's sanity shot out the door.
And here we are, we two, right where you found us—
holding on tight. The world can spin around us.
