The neighbours are always squabbling
I wish they’d put a sock in it.
Of course you have to feel sorry
for old man C and his wife.
They lost three children, including a son.
Now all they’ve got is their daughter,
a pretty girl, if over-indulged.
And the nephew – a nasty type, if you ask me.

But Lord knows why they take it out
on Mr and Mrs M in the next street
Goes back a long way, for sure.
Schoolboy quarrel? Teenage fight over a girl?
Lost in the midst of time…
But some jealousy there, I think.
Their son’s a promising lad, if he’d only
stop mooning around, writing soppy love songs…
Always to unobtainable beauties, of course.

He’d do better to concentrate
on one near to hand. Old man C’s daughter, for instance –
she’d suit him. Might even do some good . . .

A Capulet/Montague wedding might be just the thing.
