If the soul of wit is brevity,
Consider the fruit fly's longevity.
I truly cannot fathom why it
Is, despite a healthy, fruity diet,
And consuming little alcohol,
And low levels of cholesterol,
Their lives are scarcely seven days.
Yet, in most of the important ways,
Seven days is quite enough,
To bring off basic fruit fly stuff.
An extra day has little use,
To date and mate and reproduce.
Their poor souls have but meager chance,
To visit Maine or Spain or France.
It seems that time will never let a
Fruit fly write an operetta;
They rarely (unlike ticks or fleas)
Set out to earn advanced degrees.
In general, if you get the gist,
They keep a studied bucket-list,
The lesson here is, like fruit flies,
Think quickly and prioritize.
